Practice & Education - Continuing Professional Development 25 December 2017

The Radiology Directorate is committed to providing opportunities for Radiology staff to continue professional development (CPD). The department strives to provide an appropriate learning environment where all staff are encouraged to achieve their full potential, enabling delivery of a first class service to patients.

In an effort to do this, the Directorate has developed a structured approach to CPD where the support of the Directorate is clearly outlined for each individual member of staff. It is anticipated that the individual will also take some responsibility for their own development in association with opportunities offered by the department.

Professional development, both internal and external to the department encourages Radiology staff to expand their knowledge. The Directorate actively encourages role extension for Radiographers, having Advanced Practitioners in CT, MRI, Plain Film, Fluoroscopy and Ultrasound.

The Directorate also encourages multidisciplinary audit and research. Radiographers are actively encouraged to carry out audit / research and implement change in line with findings. Staff are actively encouraged to attend Directorate Audit meetings.

The Trust has an excellent Faculty of Education based at the education centre on all three main sites. Within the education centres there are library facilities and IT access which are well established. All major medical journals are carried and there are a number of databases and research tools.

CPD Portfolio

All Radiographers should maintain a professional development portfolio, in line with requirements for state registration stipulated by Health Professions Council. In July 2005, the Council agreed the following standards for continuing professional development (CPD) with the first CPD audit taking place in 2008.

A registrant must:

  1. Maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of their CPD activities;
  2. Demonstrate that their CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice;
  3. Seek to ensure that their CPD has contributed to the quality of their practice and service delivery;
  4. Seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user;
  5. Present a written profile containing evidence of their CPD on request.

Protected CPD Study Time

The Radiology Directorate across all of the sites offers each established Radiology staff member 24 hours per annum protected study for CPD. This time can be used for personal development activities such as reviewing journals, audit etc. Time can also be spent away from the department in a multidisciplinary environment, for example observing an endoscopy session. Following every period of study undertaken, the individual must complete a short reflective account, highlighting identified learning needs and benefit to practice and service.

CPD Seminar Programme

The Radiology Directorate has a comprehensive Continued Professional Development (CPD) programme, where members of staff, i.e. Radiographers, Doctors and Nurses are delivering CPD sessions on various topics across all sites, i.e. Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Good Hope Hospital.

The programme runs for a 12 month period that continues on a rolling scale with different topics each month, unless there is a particular topic staff find beneficial and useful or if there have been any developments, we are able to run that session again. Examples of the sessions that have recently been delivered are as follows:


The image interpretation e-Learning modules launched at the UK Radiological Congress (UKRC), Birmingham in June 2010. This is a free e-learning resource for radiographers and all relevant NHS staff delivered by the College of Radiographers in partnership with e-Learning for Healthcare.

The e-learning will provide a national syllabus in basic image interpretation to support radiographers and other health professionals with interpreting and offering reports on plain film x-rays of adult and paediatric appendicular and axial skeleton as well as adult chest.

The e-learning has been written by senior practitioners and university lecturers. All of the material has been approved by the College of Radiographers and a certificate is awarded on completion of each group of sessions. All learning undertaken can be recorded in CPD portfolios for professional accreditation and regulatory (HPC) CPD purposes. All courses / sessions of Image Interpretation are recorded on the National Learning Management System and integrated with the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This means results can be recorded against an individualís portable employee record.

Personal Development Reviews

In order to bring together all Training, Development and Learning within the Directorate and focus needs in line with Trust strategy, every Radiology staff member will have an annual Personal Development Review (PDR). This will provide an opportunity to discuss an individualís personal development needs. Where appropriate, Radiology staff must bring their CPD portfolio to their PDR as evidence of CPD. Many internal and external training opportunities are available and can be discussed during this session as indicated in the Training & Development Plans. A personal development plan (PDP) will then be set out for the following year and reviewed at 6 months for further support.
